LAHORE: Mohsin Naqvi has been elected unopposed as the new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Geo News reported on Tuesday.
The election, which confirmed Naqvi's appointment for a period of three years, took place at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.
PCB Chief Election Commissioner Shah Khawar officially announced the decision soon after the election.
“I am deeply honoured and humbled to have been unanimously elected as the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board. I am thankful for the trust and confidence reposed in me," Naqvi said.
“I am fully committed to upgrading the standard of the game in the country and bringing professionalism in the administration of cricket in Pakistan.”
Naqvi, who is currently serving as caretaker chief minister of Punjab, has also taken charge of the PCB since the constitution allows him to keep both roles.
The 45-year-old is the 37th chairman of the PCB.
Earlier, PCB had announced the composition of Board of Governors (BoG) ahead of the elections.
The BoG had been formed in accordance with Paragraph 10 of the PCB Constitution 2014.
After the Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar’s nomination, Naqvi replaced former chairman of the PCB Management Committee Zaka Ashraf, who resigned recently, in the BoG.
Ashraf became part of BoG on July 6, he assumed his role as the Chairman by replacing Najam Sethi on the same day.
"I was working for the betterment of cricket but it is not possible for us to work in this way," he said as per the people present at an ongoing committee meeting.
“Now it is up to Prime Minister [Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar], whomever he nominates [will take my place],” he added.
During the tenure of Ashraf, Pakistan played two major competitions - Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup. The Men in Green failed to qualify in the final of the continental tournament while they also couldn't qualify for the semi-finals of the World Cup.
